5 Effective Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Techniques for Success in Life
Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is an approach that works by changing your mental habits, so they support the success you desire in your life. If you’re interested in getting more out of your life, consider learning how to use NLP techniques to your advantage, so you can overcome common challenges and reach your goals in life. Here are five effective neuro-linguistic programming techniques you can use to improve your success in life.
The Anchoring Effect
One of the most common NLP techniques is called anchoring. Anchoring involves creating a strong association between a stimulus and the response that you want to elicit.
The stimuli could be either a physical trigger, such as tapping on your arm, or an abstract concept like imagining your favorite place.
When you associate two things together and then trigger one of them, the other will also come to mind.
Anchoring can help with many aspects of life including relaxation, confidence, and even weight loss.
For example, if you are trying to reduce stress levels, it would be beneficial to create an anchor from something calming so it triggers feelings of peace.
You could use a technique where every time you feel yourself getting stressed out all you need do is tap on your arm and think about something relaxing.
Whenever this happens again, the link has been created between the state of stress and being relaxed; thus making it easier for your brain to go back into that state more quickly than before.
The Deliberate Use of Cognitive Distortion
The deliberate use of cognitive distortion is one of the most powerful tools that NLP has to offer.
You can use it to change your view about a situation, or to change your experience of a situation.
You might have heard people say I’m going to just look on the bright side, which is an example of this type of technique.
Basically, you want to look at both the positive and negative aspects of a situation and choose whichever option feels best.
If you’re stuck in traffic and it’s really stressing you out, don’t focus on how bad traffic is and how much time you’re wasting. Instead, think about all the benefits that come with being stuck in traffic.
For example, you might get a chance to catch up with someone on the phone or take care of some emails while sitting there.
When you change your point of view like this, things start looking better because they become more manageable than before. You may even find yourself feeling grateful for being able to multitask while waiting!
The Meta Model Questions
The Meta Model is a set of questions that helps you become more conscious of your language and how it affects your mind.
These questions can be used to change the way you think, by changing the way you speak.
The following are five of the most common Meta Model questions:
- What do you mean by that? – This question will help identify assumptions or presuppositions. Sometimes people will answer with different words and other times they’ll give a completely different response. Either way, this will force them to think about what they meant when they said that.
- Can you elaborate on that? -This question allows people to explore their thoughts. It invites them to expand upon their ideas, providing an opportunity for more clarity and understanding.
- What evidence do you have that supports what you just said? -This question is great because it forces people who make assertions without evidence to justify their position based on evidence rather than opinion or speculation.
- Who told you that?
- Why did you say that?
Our NLP Master Practitioner Program covers this technique extensively. This has proved successful for many of our clients, who experience a major transformation when this technique is used earnestly and skillfully.
The Story Model
There are five components to the story model.
The first is what you want, the second is how you feel about it, the third is what you do about it, the fourth is how that makes you feel and finally what happens as a result.
When we use the story model, it becomes easier to identify obstacles in our way. We can then take the necessary steps to eliminate them so we can reach our desired outcome.
Our NLP Master Practitioner Program incorporates role plays to make this technique more practical and teach participants how to implement it in order to experience its many benefits.
Reframing
Reframing is one of the most popular NLP techniques. It’s a way of reinterpreting events, thoughts, and ideas to help them have more positive meaning in your life.
For example, if you’re feeling upset because you didn’t get that job you wanted, you might reframe it by looking at it as an opportunity to pursue other options.
You can also reframe negative emotions by thinking about what would make you feel better.
If someone says something hurtful to you, ask yourself what they meant, or think about how this person may be dealing with their own problems or emotions.
You could also reframe how you see the situation so that it seems less threatening or difficult.
We’ve only touched the surface on what NLP techniques are and how they can have a profound impact on your life.
